Understanding Light Therapy for Pain and Healing

Quick Summary

There are three main types of light therapy:

  1. LED Red Light (At-Home Devices) – Surface-level, low power

  2. Low-Level Laser Therapy (Cold Laser / LLLT) – Medical-grade, shallow tissue

  3. High-Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT / Class IV) – Medical-grade, deep tissue

Key Takeaway:

The deeper and more powerful the device, the more clinical impact it can have. At our clinic, laser therapy is combined with hands-on care and targeted rehab to treat the root cause of pain—not just the symptoms.

How They Work

All three therapies use light to stimulate healing, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. The difference is how much energy reaches the tissue.

1. LED Red Light (At-Home Devices)

  • Light source: Non-coherent LEDs

  • Power: Very low

  • Depth: ~2–5 mm (skin and superficial tissue)

  • Best for: Skin health, mild inflammation, general wellness

Limitations: Cannot effectively reach muscles, tendons, or deeper joints.

2. Low-Level Laser Therapy (Cold Laser / LLLT)

  • Light source: Coherent, Class III laser (~5–500 mW)

  • Power: Low but focused

  • Depth: Slightly deeper than LED, superficial or mid-level tissue

  • Best for: Mild musculoskeletal pain, superficial tendons, inflammation

Called “cold” because it does not produce heat.

3. High-Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT / Class IV)

  • Light source: High-power, focused laser (0.5–15+ W)

  • Depth: Several centimeters (muscles, tendons, joints)

  • Effects: Photobiomodulation + mild thermal effects

  • Best for: Chronic musculoskeletal pain, deeper tendon injuries, low back or neck pain

Key Point: HILT is a stronger, deeper-reaching version of low-level laser therapy.

Is an At-Home Device Enough?

  • Maybe: For general wellness or very mild, superficial issues

  • Probably Not: For chronic pain, tendon injuries, back/neck pain, or deeper joint issues

Final Thought

These therapies are different tools, not competitors.

  • LED devices: Convenient, surface-level benefits

  • Cold lasers: Medical-grade, shallow clinical effects

  • High-intensity lasers: Deep tissue, powerful clinical impact

In our clinic, high intensity laser therapy is part of a comprehensive plan, combined with hands-on care, manual therapy, and targeted rehab to treat the root cause of pain and help you get back to doing what you love—without symptoms holding you back.
