Active Release Technique (ART) is a hands-on treatment that combines precise tension with movement to release tight or injured soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. It was developed by Dr. Michael Leahy, a chiropractor who worked extensively with the Denver Broncos and has been highly influential in sports medicine. Today, ART is used not only by chiropractors, but also by physical therapists, athletic trainers, and massage therapists who are trained in the technique.
My introduction to Active Release Technique, or ART, began during my college years. As a pre-chiropractic student and an athlete, I faced a persistent shoulder issue that simply wouldn’t resolve in the athletic training room. My strength coach, recognizing the need for something more targeted, introduced me to ART. I still remember that initial session—my coach applying pressure in my armpit area while I moved my arm. It was intense and, admittedly, a bit painful, but the relief was almost immediate. My range of motion improved, and the shoulder pain significantly diminished, allowing me to perform at my best and even win that competition. I should note, my teammates were much better than me, but they are at a big time competition giving me a window to finally win something…
This experience was influential for me. As I pursued a career in sports medicine and chiropractic, I realized the immense value of ART. During chiropractic school, I sought out the best mentors in soft tissue injury diagnosis and treatment with Dr. Josh Sandell as my first major influence. Professional and Olympic athletes from all over the country would come into our clinic for the specialized sports medicine and soft tissue techniques. Under his guidance, I honed my skills and delved deeply into various soft tissue techniques, with ART quickly becoming my favorite. I became certified in ART as a student and maintained that certification a decade. The results I saw and continue to see in my patients were extraordinary, from relieving shoulder and back pain to addressing running-related injuries.
When I moved to the Fox Valley, my expertise in ART set me apart. I was the only provider offering this technique in the region, and coupled with my board certification in sports medicine, I was uniquely positioned to help patients with soft tissue and athletic injuries.
This journey with ART not only shaped my professional path but also reinforced my commitment to helping others overcome their pain and achieve their best performance.
