What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that is most seen in the adolescents age group. It affects around 6 million people in the United States, and is accountable for more than 600,000 doctor visits each year.

What can be done?

On Medical News Today, a recent study found that a yoga pose can have a direct impact on the spine curvature associated with scoliosis. Their study consisted of 25 participants aged 14-85 with scoliosis. They were told to do a side plank on the weaker side of the spine at least 3 times a week with a duration of 90 seconds each time. They found that "spine curvature improved by around 32% over all patients." More specifically, adolescents had a much greater result with an overall improvement of 49.6%.

What is a side plank?

A side plank is when both feet are together and one forearm is directly below your shoulder while laying on your side. Raise your hips. contract your core, and maintain a straight line from your head to your feet.
