What can we do for arthritis (OA)? This is a common question we get here. Knee arthritis as the most common. Some folks are trying to delay a joint replacement and looking for options to reduce symptoms.

The common medical options, short of a joint replacement, are steroid injections, hyaluronic acid injections, NSAIDs and other pain relievers. Newer options include PRP and stem cell injections. The standard conservative options are activity modification, exercise and weight management. Therapy options like specific exercise, manual therapy, modalities and dry needling.

If you need it replaced, get it done. But if you’re not ready yet, the best combination of treatments I have seen so far are:

  1. A structured exercise/rehab program

  2. Shockwave & Laser (high intensity)

  3. Select individuals can benefit from manual therapy but not all.

Other things to look into/talk to your physician about (legal disclaimer):

  4. PRP injection

  5. Meriva

More info: Shockwave therapy uses sound waves to stimulate growth factors and reduce pain. It’s particularly effective for knee arthritis. Laser therapy enhances pain reduction and blocks enzymes contributing to knee OA. The combination of laser and shockwave has delivered excellent results for many of our patients. We are seeing a 50% reduction of pain scores 8 weeks after the first treatment. It’s a 6 session protocol and can be done 1-2 times per year max, I should note, it’s less effective for advanced OA.
